Wa West: MP marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day with constituents

28th May every year marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day, menstrual cycle is a natural phenomenon that girls go through from the beginning of puberty till menopause, girls however across the world continue to experience discrimination relating to their periods. The limited comprehensive menstrual health education triggers misinformation and stigmatisation.

The day, World Menstrual Hygiene therefore strives to normalise menstruation and remove stigma associated with menstruation among women especially young girls.

In a step to promote menstrual health and hygiene, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, Member of Parliament for the Wa West Constituency participated in this year’s  2024 World Menstrual Hygiene Day in four centres namely Dorimon, Wechiua, Lassia and Nyoli communities across his constituency.

This years’ event which was graced under the theme dubbed  #Period Friendly World” seeks to strive on healthy menstrual practices as well as removing stigma associated with menstruation.

Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu whiles interacting with his constituents highlighted that, menstruation is a fundamental human right and the need for girls within the brackets of menstruation to be educated and supported to enjoy friendly periods.

He states ” since menstruation is a fundamental human right,government should take away the taxes on pad and rather boost local production of it”. The MP further encouraged all men to develop a habit of buying pads for their daughters and wives as a step in eradicating the stigma associated with menstruation.

Hon. Peter Lanchene underscored the importance of menstrual hygiene, stating that unhealthy practices during menstruation can lead to serious infections thereby affecting the total wellbeing of girls and women.

The Wa West Law Maker rounded up the occasion by making  a donation of three thousand sanitary pads to students across the Wa West Constituency. The occasion was witnessed by a National Executive Council Member of the largest opposition Natinal Democratic Congress, Madam Cecilia Asaga.

The Member of Parliament also visited Lassia Tuolu Senior High School to inspect the progress of work for the construction of a new multipurpose hall for the school under Getfund. The new hall project became a necessity after fire razed down the schools’ old hall months ago.

Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu seized the opportunity and express his grateful to Getfund on behalf of the chiefs and people of the Wa West constituency for the swift response to the school’s plight and was happy over the progress of work done so far. He was hopeful that the six months project would be completed as scheduled by the contractor.
