On Wednesday, July 26, 2024, the Wa West District Education Directorate organized it’s District wide level reading festival comprising of six (6) participants from all Sixteen Circuits.

The District level reading festival held at the forecourt of the Wechiua Naah’s palace involved a contest between sixteen Circuits.

The festival was held under the auspices of the Wa West Education Directorate with collaboration from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ghana Systems Strengthening Activity (SAGES).

The collaboration aims at promoting culture of reading among pupils at the lower primary. The festival provided an avenue for the district to choose its six top-performing early grade readers to represent the district at the Regional level Competition.

Parents Association, School Management Committee, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and educational authorities were amongst the stakeholders who attended the festival.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Amatus D. Tuu-uu, Wa West District Director of Education underscored the relevance of early grade reading stating that “it is a path to the world”. “Reading cultivates the habit of reading, reading helps pupils to improve upon their literacy skill, forster critical thinking and help boost confidence and self esteem in pupils” he added.

He again indicated that, this was the second time the Wa West District Education Directorate has organised such fruitful event.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for the Wa West, Hon. Vida Dorothy, recalled how the recent disturbances between the people of Kandeu and Lasia-Tuolu that befell the district few weeks ago affected the peace in the district and therefore seized the opportunity and admonished residents to embrace peace, tolerate one another.”If you have peace without money, you have everything”

She mentioned her indebted to the security for their efforts in restoring peace back into the district whiles reiterating the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that the needed infrastructure that will enable the Education Directorate to enhance teaching and learning is provided within the shortest possible time.

The DCE was optimistic that the final contestants to represent the District would make the Wa West District proud by winning the Regional Reading Competition.

On his part, Hon. Abdulai R.Y. Mahama, Representative of the Paramount Chief of the Wechiua Traditional Area stated the continues commitment of the traditional council in supporting education. He described the event as a competition amongst teachers and not the pupils.

The ninety six (96) contestants were all quizzed on spelling , reading and comprehension as well as phonics.

The Wa West District at the end of the one-day event selected Mahama Salam ( Tanvaare Circuit) and Balige Rebecca ( Dorimon Circuit) to represent it at the Basic One level, whereas Batiera Sarah ( Ga Circuit) and Seidu Zaria ( Lassie Circuit) also representing the district at the Basic two category.

Again, Dugu – Naah Joseph ( Dorimon) and Dugu Naah Kusia ( Dorimon) would represent the Wa West District at the Basic three level.
